<div style="text-align: justify;">
A bit of a mystery this one. The band appear to be called P45 and the song is <i>Making My Way Back Home</i>. The cover caught my eye with its reggae-esque imagery and the record is in very good condition. On playing it I found that the song actually matched the cover very well; i.e. reggae-esque, bright and cheerful but perhaps lacking a little polish or finesse. The picture below shows the label in detail. The label seems to be KA and the serial number is DAVE 1.</div>

The B-side is called <i>Junk Food</i> and has a very different feel to the A, it's a little reminiscent of some of the tracks on the <i>Nutty Boys</i> album by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zwg3_NBirA" target="_blank">Crunch</a> (Lee Thompson & Chris Foreman's post-Madness band). </div>

Whilst waiting for my kids to finish one of their after-school clubs recently I got chatting to one of the other parents and mentioned my interest in music and specifically reggae music. The ensuing conversation went something like this:</div>
<div>
"Oh, really? Like UB40 then?"</div>
<div>
"Not really; UB40's first 2 LPs were good but then they became very commercial and more of a covers / wedding band than a real reggae act."</div>
<div>
"Haha, true - some of them weren't even black!"</div>
<div>
"You don't have to be black to make reggae music."</div>
<div>
"Oh, isn't reggae all about Rastas and marijuana and stuff?"</div>
<div>
"No."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wondered why it was UB40 that sprung to their mind at the mention of reggae and not Bob Marley or Jimmy Cliff for instance. I concluded that it was because they were of a similar age to myself, British, and not particularly interested in music beyond the charts. As their teenage years coincided with the time when UB40 were frequent visitors to the charts and the nation's favourite (TM) Radio One wasn't exactly stuffed to the gills with reggae (or good music in general), I suppose it isn't surprising that UB40 fit the 'reggae' slot in their mind. Presumably reggae / UB40 wasn't really their cup of tea back then and they were never inspired to look further for other examples of reggae music, understandably leaving them with this 'Reggae = UB40' viewpoint. The band most often associated in the mainstream with a musical genre are likely to become the default representatives of that genre. That is the thought that has prompted this blog post today and also filled me with dread.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let's take the above encounter and fast-forward a generation or two... Given that UB40 are no longer the big name and chart regulars they once were, which band or singer would a young person who is currently in the midst of their most impressionable years find to fill the 'default reggae' slot in their mindset? It has been some time since I paid any attention to what is in the charts but in the name of research I have today glanced at the UK top 40. Much as I expected, I hadn't heard of the vast majority of the acts - partly because I'm old and also because most of them are bloody awful manufactured pap. Neither could any of the current top 40 records could be described as reggae. As I said, I don't follow the charts but my guess is that reggae bands rarely if ever feature these days. Neither does reggae get much mainstream airplay. So, which act will our theoretical impressionable young person associate with the word 'reggae' now. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My fear is that as there isn't much mainstream exposure of real reggae today, if our young person takes the 'all about Rastas and marijuana' viewpoint then the name that will spring to their mind is Snoop Lion, the latest version of the artist formally known as Snoop Dogg. Now Snoop has had something of a conversion it seems. Following a trip to Jamaica last year he has proclaimed himself to be a Rasta, made a documentary film about his conversion and released an album. The album is titled <i>Reincarnated</i> and the cover shows Snoop wreathed in (presumably) ganja smoke above the title emblazoned in red, gold and green. The cover certainly looks like a reggae album might. A perusal of the song titles reveals a number with reggae-esque names: <i>Harder Times, Here Comes The King, Smoke The Weed, </i>etc. Snoop is so confident of his new-found place in the world of reggae that he has even managed to have a gangster-rap-style feud with reggae legend and Rasta Bunny Wailer. As detailed in this <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/apr/25/snoop-lion-bunny-wailer-rastafarianism" target="_blank">Guardian story</a>, the unseemly row erupted when Bunny Wailer had the temerity to question Dogg's dedication to his new faith.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I haven't seen the film about Snoop's conversion, he doesn't strike me as someone I would particularly warm to and find it something of a coincidence that he happened to have a film crew in tow when he had his Road-to-Damascus moment and found his new calling. I have, however, listened to the album. I haven't bought the album though. I usually buy a new reggae album without previewing it because I enjoy the experience of sitting down to listen to a new album in its entirety. With <i>Reincarnation</i> however I had my doubts about the integrity of the music, so I listened to the album on preview and very quickly decided not to buy it. Why didn't I buy it? Because it is crap. I sat for a little while trying to come up with a more eloquent or clever way of saying that but sorry, I failed; it's crap. Even a collaboration with Miley Cyrus can't rescue this dog of an album. Again, I intended when starting this to give a measured and considered opinion of <i>Reinvented</i> but having listened to it three times I have lost the ability to be polite about it or to rein in the sarcasm. I used to pledge that I would never write a review of something I didn't enjoy because I think there is generally too much negativity in the world already, but the glowing reviews of this garbage I read on iTunes made me feel that a counter-point was desirable.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The opening track is called <i>Rebel Way</i>, making me wonder what exactly Snoop is rebelling against. He certainly isn't rebelling against mediocrity. Track by track Snoop rehashes every reggae cliché there is on this album. An example: the track <i>Smoke The Weed</i> contains the line "Weed is life, weed is reality" sung to the tune of Soul II Soul's <i>Back To Life</i>. This could stand as an anti-metaphor for the whole album; there is little life in this work, I didn't detect an ounce of reality and appropriating a seminal piece such as <i>Back To Life</i> just underlines the dishonesty integral to every sorry track. In <i>Boulevard</i> Snoop echoes the Rude Boy tradition of Jamaican music, badly. The closing track is called <i>Harder Times</i>; this called to mind the Pioneers classic <i>Time Hard</i> with their heartfelt cry of "Why Oh Why Oh Lord"! Perhaps I would have found this album more palatable if I had listened to it not knowing the back story, but even if I had I would have said it is more modern R&B than reggae. I find most modern R&B pretty uninspiring too so this album would suit that label nicely. I was tempted to do a track-by-track dissection of the album but was worried that I might run out of negative superlatives.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cynics might suggest that Snoop is merely re-positioning himself to reignite interest in a flagging career or even that he is just using Rastafari to justify his fondness of the herb. Any artist who reinvents themselves or claims some form of conversion always leaves themselves open to accusations such as this. I'm not a Rasta and my knowledge of the faith doesn't extend much beyond what I hear on reggae records so any opinion I may hold on Snoop's conversion to the faith is irrelevant and necessarily ill-informed. Neither do I use marijuana so I don't feel I can comment on that aspect of Snoop's persona. I do, however, sincerely love reggae music and can say both objectively and subjectively that this album is awful. Let's hope someone else comes along to fill the 'default reggae' slot soon and that Snoop Lion becomes a Dogg again and returns to doing whatever it is he is good at. Sorry Snoopy old chap, you just can't do reggae.</div>

This post is the first in a (probably) occasional series posting odd bits of vinyl I've picked up either at our local charity shops or at the wonder-land that is Exeter Tip*. Within a short walk from my house are three charity shops which have yet to succumb to the 'Oxfam Syndrome' which I described/ranted about in a previous <a href="http://ramblesonabit.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/faith-hope-charity-shops.html" target="_blank">blog post</a>. We are also blessed locally with the aforementioned Tip, a wonderful recycling centre which flogs all manner of oddities and rubbish for sensible (i.e. cheap) prices and which often receives boxes of unwanted vinyl. I usually take a stroll over to the charity shops or a drive to the Tip about once a week and have found some wonderful records for delightfully low prices over time. In celebration of these bargains I have decided to upload some of the best or strangest things I find on an occasional basis.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Having read the above back it does seem an incredibly long-winded way to say: <i><b><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpslRBdlh-U" target="_blank">"Look what I found today!"</a></b></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglryPfbvrf4hRXYHK8BoZB0jvgxESSkeiElyY-qu3TfUZxG0gD2-eltMkjKUjaBdWstFnFYrCPEVYAnbTVtvZZQRMkMfFFUlIHZ8r-z6x5lfEGEEH57fV9Ri8iQhnjFdKz6EAR1VQLNfo/s1600/Swans+Way.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglryPfbvrf4hRXYHK8BoZB0jvgxESSkeiElyY-qu3TfUZxG0gD2-eltMkjKUjaBdWstFnFYrCPEVYAnbTVtvZZQRMkMfFFUlIHZ8r-z6x5lfEGEEH57fV9Ri8iQhnjFdKz6EAR1VQLNfo/s320/Swans+Way.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To be honest today was a fairly lean day for vinyl at the Tip but I did find four 45's amongst the Jim Reeves, Ronco & K-Tel LPs. So for the grand total of a quid I got this and three other singles. I knew absolutely nothing about the band Swans Way and having since researched them online am not much the wiser. The single is in great condition with a nice picture sleeve and having given it a play I was inspired to stick it on YouTube and write this post. I'm not saying this will become an all-time favourite but the tune has, I think, a lot going for it and I consider my 25p money very well spent. If anyone has any info on the band please feel free to leave a comment.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
* Exeter Tip isn't the official title - it is probably something like 'Exeter & District Public Recycling, Refuse Disposal and Reclamation Facility' but I honestly cannot be arsed to look it up.</div>

It seems my radio shows are like buses; you wait weeks for one and two come along right next to each other! Having played an hour of non-stop Northern Soul last night I got really brave tonight and switched my mic on to present an hour of Reggae (and Stuff). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There's no particular theme to the playlist although I played more new music than is my norm with brand new tunes from The Nomarks, Morning Sun & the Essentials, Soloman and the wonderfully-named Dirty Undies. It has been something of a bugbear of mine recently that most new ska music sounds the bleeding same but I'm delighted to be proved wrong on this occasion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are links below to the newer bands and tracks I played. Please take a little time to check them out and if you like their stuff let them know. It always does folks good to be told their efforts are appreciated and bands are no exception - let's offset some of the undeserved adoration heaped on non-entities like Bieber, One Direction, etc and tell those bands producing REAL music that it is appreciated and valued.</div>
Sermon over, here's the playlist:<br />

I haven't been making radio shows for a few weeks due to another extended trip to the Dark Side. When I'm ill sometimes even music loses its magic, however there's only so much shit TV you can watch and so many walks you can give the dog before something has to give, the headphones must be donned and music pumped into the tortured mind. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I'm such a generous soul I decided it was only fair that I share some of this medicinal music with folks; hence this, an hour of non-stop Northern Soul that I used to blank out the horrors of Saturday Night TV. There was no waffle, just a selection of what I consider to be some of the greatest tunes ever committed to vinyl!</div>

Tonight we at Fusion were honoured to be able to preview the brand new album by the Scottish Ska Juggernaut that is <a href="http://www.bombskare.com/" target="_blank"><b>Bombskare</b></a> and the band kindly gave us a fistful of copies to give away. For my money Bombskare are the finest ska band in the world today. They produce ska of the highest quality infused with an irresistible humour and upbeat, brassy bounciness!<i> </i>I asked each of the band members to choose a track for me to play on the show and they duly obliged. To this I added two tracks from the album and the rest of the playlist was drawn from a selection of tunes that the band said were favourites of theirs. I can't argue with their choices - there isn't a track on this playlist that I didn't enjoy! </div>

<a href="http://mixlr.com/fusion-on-air/showreel/richs-reggae-and-stuff-feb-24th-2013/" target="_blank">Tonight's show</a> was all about cover versions / alternate versions. Always great fun to do, these shows tend to lean more towards ska than reggae. This could indicate a lack of imagination on the behalf of ska bands but I prefer to think it's just that they recognise when a song can be improved by the application of some ska!</div>

It's quite an eclectic playlist for <a href="http://mixlr.com/fusion-on-air/showreel/richs-reggae-and-stuff-3/" target="_blank">tonight's show</a>. I saw Lee Perry earlier in the week and this is reflected in the list, along with a tune from his support act, the wonderful <a href="http://laidblak.co.uk/" target="_blank">Laid Blak</a>. The playlist had a bit of everything this week; some soul, a couple of cover versions, a fair bit of ska, a couple of seriously funky tunes and even some steel drums! Hope you enjoyed the show. If you haven't had a listen yet you can find it on my <a href="https://soundcloud.com/zengintepe" target="_blank">soundcloud</a> page.</div>

<span style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Putting this together gave me so much pleasure, I hope that came across on the air. I have been told I sound dour, dull and even apologetic. Oh well, not to worry! If you want "Hey guys, let's go craaaaazy" I suggest commercial radio; if you want real music being played by a music lover because it makes them smile or moves them then give <a href="https://twitter.com/FusionOnAir" target="_blank">Fusion</a> a try!</span></div>

You may have seen me tweeting and re-tweeting recently about me having another crack at internet radio, this time with new station <a href="http://mixlr.com/fusion-on-air/" target="_blank">Fusion On Air</a>. The main reason for me once again dipping my toes into the waters of DJism is simply that I've really missed the buzz of hearing a tune, wanting to share it and having the outlet to do so! Fusion are launching this evening (Sunday 3rd Feb) with three one-hour shows. My slot this week is the middle of the three at 8pm UK time but I'm not going to have a set showtime, or a set type of show. This week it's just a selection of reggae (and stuff) that has made me smile over the last week or two; future shows may follow that format or may have a theme of some sort. Next weekend I'll be presenting an hour of Women of Reggae, the only male voice you'll hear will be mine - and I keep that to an absolute minimum. Please pop along to have a listen live or stream the shows on mixlr. The ethos behind Fusion is simple "Just for the love of music, and the fun of it!"; no rampant egoism, no commercial pap, no superstar DJs - just decent music that we wanted to share. You can find Fusion on Twitter as <a href="https://twitter.com/FusionOnAir" target="_blank">@FusionOnAir</a>. Here's some <i>ConFUSION </i>music to whet your appetite in the mean time!</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">... or at least one of them, is <a href="http://www.flipron.co.uk/" target="_blank">Flipron</a>. Not just because they write witty and catchy tunes as will be proved if you listen to this:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/OIHFvKiE8D0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4pbjW63wsGt2RQA7HmfypGiBH1Wps807NMUnJhvWPndx5w_Lwl-xhCIVHZZH7KFUiQ0kWYoDEpFTnAWmzeb1_-83g4xraukFVI16v-d-B1-3qX_xy7f_MZf3g1_KomLExchQ_34I6QtA/s1600/Flip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></a><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4pbjW63wsGt2RQA7HmfypGiBH1Wps807NMUnJhvWPndx5w_Lwl-xhCIVHZZH7KFUiQ0kWYoDEpFTnAWmzeb1_-83g4xraukFVI16v-d-B1-3qX_xy7f_MZf3g1_KomLExchQ_34I6QtA/s1600/Flip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4pbjW63wsGt2RQA7HmfypGiBH1Wps807NMUnJhvWPndx5w_Lwl-xhCIVHZZH7KFUiQ0kWYoDEpFTnAWmzeb1_-83g4xraukFVI16v-d-B1-3qX_xy7f_MZf3g1_KomLExchQ_34I6QtA/s200/Flip.jpg" width="200" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Neither is it just because they are from the South West (although that does tend to incline my head and heart to view any band more favourably) and have songs with titles like <i>Hanging Round The Lean-To With Grandad </i>and <i>Raindrops Keeps Falling On The Dead</i>. The fact that their new album is called <i>Firework Shoes</i> and has a lovely, colourful, smiley cover certainly helps, but that isn't the main reason I'm so struck with Flipron either:</span><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Nor is it because their latest single is a collaboration with Specials legend Neville Staple. Or that said single is a truly wonderful slice of Spaghetti Western Boss Reggae that would grace any Trojan </span><span style="font-size: large;">compilation</span><span style="font-size: large;">:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/z7qSsAnI2AQ?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">No, I think the reason I'm so struck by this band is all of the above PLUS the fact that when I ordered a couple of EP's and a 45 from their record label - <a href="http://www.tinydog.co.uk/" target="_blank">Tiny Dog Records</a> - I got an friendly, personal email from them thanking me for my order, asking how I heard of the band and telling me when I could expect my records. On a weekend! You don't get THAT with Amazon or iTunes. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Neither do you get music of this variety, originality or quality on mainstream radio or the TV. Which, I suppose, is why I feel the need to write posts like this - it's my small attempt to redress the balance somewhat. Christmas is coming; I know there's more chance of being bitten by a daffodil than of an independent artist getting the Christmas number one in the meaningless charts, BUT... If you are thinking of buying the latest X-Factor travesty for someone; why not get them a copy of <i>Firework Shoes</i> instead, or in fact any album or EP from a band that exists outside the comfy, crooked, corporate world of the media machine? You'd be giving them a much better gift, supporting REAL music and you'd probably win the Christmas Lottery too.*</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">*I made that lottery bit up - don't blame me if you don't win. Blame God. Or Cameron. Or Dave Lee Travis. Or some other git.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

We in Devon are going to get our very own Police Commissioner. How exciting! It seems this is a country-wide thing that our dear leaders deem to be in our best interests; although on past form I have my suspicions it wouldn't be happening unless there is a bung, a big-business favour or back-door privatisation hidden somewhere in the agenda. </div>

I emailed all of the candidates through the <a href="https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=122&ea.campaign.id=17105" target="_blank">League Against Cruel Sports</a> website and of only TWO replies Nicky's was the one that won my vote. Not only did she mention her opposition to the cruel, pointless and barbaric badger cull, she also didn't instruct me not to email again like one of the other candidates! Note to Mr Ivan Jordan, that is not, perhaps, the best way to win support! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Never needing much excuse to pick out a few tunes on any given subject I offer these 5 Police-related tunes for your perusal:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Kicking off with a classic from one of the finest voices to grace reggae - or any other genre for that matter - <b>Junior Murvin</b>'s timeless <i>Police & Thieves</i>.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/ndIudkNlJJE?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>I received the <i>It's Gonna Get Dirty</i> EP by <b>Dirty Revolution</b> from Do The Dog records this week (2 free CD's with a renewal of my subscription to the Do The Dog skazine - can't fault that!) This track is off that EP and pretty bloody good in my opinion it is too!</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/P7SsUKM31Fg?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Next up is a tune from the criminally-overlooked <i>Nutty Boys</i> album from <b>Crunch!</b> - Chris and Lee from Madness. I've got a mate who still maintains that the album is called Crunch! and that the band is The Nutty Boys. But he's wrong. So there.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/z4JQfOPUgFI?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Riding on the success of Murvin's <i>Police and Thieves</i>, Lee Perry released a number of dub and DJ cuts on the same track and rhythm. This DJ version from <b>Jah Lion</b> is on the Arkology box set and an absolute belter:</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/83i1LCpW3A8?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Finishing this little selection in storming style is <b>The Humanitarians</b> with <i>Call The Police</i>. Sorry, that should "the award-winning Humanitarians", two nights ago the band deservedly picked up the Best EP award at the <a href="http://swma.vpweb.co.uk/" target="_blank">South West Music Awards</a>. I reviewed this absolute belter a couple of posts ago and it's still getting played almost daily in the Badger House.</li>
</ul>

This is my playlist for this week's show. Had a few technical issues (probably down to stupidity rather than actual technical stuff!) and also seemed to be suffering from advanced gob-shitedness last night. The saving grace was my co-presenter; young Danny Buster gave me a hand last night. I know I'm a biased Dad but it does make me immensely proud that he'd rather listen to scratchy old records with his Dad than watch the X-Factor or whatever other bilge is on the telly. I shan't be putting this show on Soundcloud as I didn't think it was very good, but you can stream it here:
<a href="http://mixlr.com/sfr/showreel/sfr-soundsystem-part-2/">http://mixlr.com/sfr/showreel/sfr-soundsystem-part-2/</a> </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The other saving grace was that we had a fantastic <i>brand new</i> tune from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Urang-Matang/168694793218338" target="_blank">Urang Matang</a>, some great Spanish ska from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Alademoskaband/app_113137198733722" target="_blank">Alademoska</a>, the title track from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/BANG-the-Skillet/112373678824256" target="_blank">BANG the Skillet's</a> <i>Do the Dishes</i> album, a great track off the <a href="http://www.specializedcharityalbum.co.uk/" target="_blank">Specialized </a>album, FOUR tracks from the great Rico Rodriguez and tons of classic ska, reggae & 2Tone that got me singing and bouncing and hopefully did the same for the listeners.</div>

<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;">The Moons.<br />
93 Feet East, Brick Lane, London.<br />
12th September 2012<br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;">Last night found me in the middle of curry mile in London's Brick Lane to watch
The Moons at 93 Feet East.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;">Unperturbed by the smell of vomit and urine by the ticket office, or indeed the
over zealous ticket girl who had to find my name on a list even when I'd
produced my ticket, I ventured into the fairly large venue to watch opening act
The Kumari.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;">Full of verve and vigour the tore through a set that was as slick as the lead
singers quiff, a good opener with solid tunes (even if their best song was a
The Kinks/The Hives hybrid rip-off - or should I be kind and say
"homage") I'll be looking out for them in future but there appears to
be and American goth band of the same name which makes finding out about them a
little tedious.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;">After a quick change over it was the turn of Mucky Pups to take the stage,
their first tune was very promising, a kind of Strokes sound with a bit of
Johnny Marr guitar over the top. Unfortunately it was fairly indiscernible from
the rest of the set. They appear to have found a sound they like and repeated
ad infinitum. The rhythm section was solid and powerful and I think the drummer
is far better than the rest of the band.</span></div>
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;">Another
quick change and it was the turn of the new line-up moons to take the stage,
new members Chris (guitar) and Ben (bass) certainly looking the part alongside
Andy (guitar/vocals), Tom (keys and cowbell) and Ben (drums). The crowd had
certainly thickened out and tentatively made their way closer to the stage with
a wide range of ages present, the broad appeal of The Moons was obvious to see,
what's less obvious to me is why they are not bigger than they are, maybe the
days of proper song craft have passed by again and the off the shelf punk pop
of The Vaccines has become de rigour, it baffles me.</span></div>

Fables of History album, Forever Came Today and Revolutionary Lovers
demonstrated the fuller, harder and less innocent sound we can expect from the
new album. The last single Double Vision Love was up next and went down a storm
with the crowd along with singalong favourite Everyday Heroes. Even with Andy struggling
with an obviously very sore throat the crowd were certainly on his side and
helped him out.</div>
</span>
</span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;">The new band members were certainly on their
game with Chris adding some very cool West Coast sounding guitars to Promise
Not To Tell and How Long. My personal favourite, and a lot of the crowds too by
the volume of singing, English Summer was up next, a song that carries on a
tradition of the storming b-side, a Beatleseque ode to our favourite topic of
conversation. Debut single Torn Between Two was followed by two more new tracks
Can You See Me and the fantastic Something Soon with driving rhythm and chopped
guitars it reminded me of The Jam and the fact that Paul Weller had a hand in
the song was plain to see. Chinese Whispers really rattled the crowds bones as
always and the set closed with an instant classic from Fables Of History the
shout along It's Taking Over. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><span style="background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
The band left the stage very briefly before the
strepsilled Andy returned with his acoustic guitar for current single Jennifer
(Sits Alone). But not before introducing a clearly embarrassed Jennie to the
crowd and urging us all to watch the box fresh video for the song on YouTube
(which I duly did and was well worth the effort - get on it!).</div>
</span>
</span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><span style="background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
The rest of the band rejoined the stage for
elongated versions of Nightmare Day, with a stunning "get back into
bed" refrain, and closing song Don't Go Changing which left the crowd
sweating and happy. </div>
</span>
</span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><span style="background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
The band then signed copies of their singles,
the CD and rather sexy White Vinyl of Fables Of History which are available to
pre-order from Amazon and iTunes (released on 24th October) and at the rest of
the dates on the tour.</div>
</span>
</span><div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><span style="background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm not
sure if I agree with the sentiment of Don't Go Changing because if last night
was anything to go by changing is definitely a good thing.</div>

<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;">I'm not usually over-impressed by the descriptions bands give to their own sound; the way they invite the reader to imagine some improbable or impossible coming together of musical giants and then boldly stating that THAT is what their records sound like. We've all read them - <i><span style="color: #351c75;">The Scruttocks take the power & majesty of Nik Kershaw, add the tenderness & subtlety of Judge Dread and infuse their music with the lyrical dexterity of Slayer</span></i> - that sort of nonsense. Invariably such descriptions tend towards hyperbole; frequently they are utterly baffling; sometimes one detects a tongue firmly planted in cheek; often they're just plain bollocks. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;">Usually a website blurb that promises:<i> </i><span style="line-height: 115%;"><i><span style="color: #351c75;">Imagine The Clash jamming with Lou Reed and Kasabian at
The Leveller's Beautiful Days festival after a particularly big night out at a
Soundgarden gig</span> </i>would have me aiming my mouse towards the little red cross at the top right of the page. But wait! I read on... <span style="color: #351c75; font-style: italic;">And then all of a sudden Joe Strummer says, "We need some
trombone". </span>Ah, now you're talking - there isn't much that can't be enhanced with a bit of brass. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><span style="line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Such is the promise of Devon band <a href="http://thehumanitarians.net/fr_home.cfm" target="_blank">The Humanitarians</a> on their website but does the reality live up to the promise? On the strength of their current single I'm happy, and amazed, to say that on this occasion the reality really does match the purple prose.<i> </i>Title-track <i>Call the Police</i> is an absolute belter of a track; 3 minutes and 20 seconds of stomping guitar, driven drums and parping brass. Caustic lyrics painting an accurate but bleak picture of the Jeremy Kyle society we are spawning should in theory be at odds with the bouncing tune but in practice they work wonderfully well together. Add to this a cracking video featuring pseudo-celebrities, chavs on CCTV, a gorgeous 1974 Ford Consul (and some actors) and you have something I can watch and listen to over and again. </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/nB1J2CI38yw?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><span style="line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background-color: #f3f3f3;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The B-side, <i>Weatherman</i>, begins with Michael Fish famously predicting that it may get a bit breezy but not to worry; an intro that on first listen led me to expect more of the same as was delivered by <i>Call the Police</i>. <i>Weatherman</i>, however, has a very different feel to the A-side, being more folky and melodic yet still driven and insistent. Two tracks of such quality and diversity auger well for the forthcoming album <i>No Law</i>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Humanitarians current line up consists of singer, songwriter and guitarist John Mathew, Geoff Dalley on bass, Hayden Jones on drums and Rich Mills providing brass - mostly trombone - and guitar (presumably not at the same time). Rich describes the forthcoming album as "folky tunes rocking hard then veering into reggae breakdowns. Sabbath & Soundgarden influences creep in occasionally alongside The Clash, Specials, Lou Reed, Madness, Blur, Kasabian & Jam influences" and he promises, "it's varied, but it works." That's quite a list of influences and sounds to look out for; personally I prefer to steer away from the 'sounds like...' descriptions but can wholeheartedly agree with Rich's last statement: "It works"! As well as the album there are tracks ready for an EP release to follow soon which "may" include a cover of Al Wilson's <i>The Snake - </i>bloody hope so, I love that tune! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Call the Police / Weatherman</i> is available on <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/call-the-police-single/id557014827" target="_blank">iTunes</a>, Amazon and Spotify, with more stores coming online soon. You can hear more of The Humanitarians on <a href="http://soundcloud.com/the-humanitarians" target="_blank">Soundcloud</a> and there is also a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/414055415320584/" target="_blank">Facebook group</a> for the single release. The intro on the FB page says, "We're doing this totally independently of record company/label support so any help you can give us is much appreciated." There's so much cack out there that IS getting the support of major labels, media empires, publishers, etc: surely nobody who appreciates great, new REAL music can fail to sympathise with that sentiment. The Humanitarians are producing cracking new music and I hope they get that support. If you like these tracks please share the links to their <a href="http://thehumanitarians.net/fr_home.cfm" target="_blank">website</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/thehumanitarians" target="_blank">Facebook</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/thumanitarians" target="_blank">Twitter</a>, <a href="http://soundcloud.com/the-humanitarians" target="_blank">Soundcloud</a>, etc, ask for them on your radio station of choice but don't forget to buy them too!</div>

Tonight's show not only had an incredibly alliterative title but was bloody good fun to do too! Every track has a film or TV link, some more tenuous than others to be honest! As always you can listen again on the SFR <a href="http://mixlr.com/sfr/showreel/sfr-soundsystem-silver-screen-special/" target="_blank">mixlr page</a>, grab the podcast from iTunes or listen / download from my <a href="http://soundcloud.com/zengintepe" target="_blank">Soundcloud page</a> (for one week or until I put my next show on there!) Huge thanks to Mick for all the sound-bites & clips that are sprinkled through the show. Mick is another SFR DJ - find him on Twitter as <a href="https://twitter.com/MickCollins002" target="_blank">@MickCollins00</a>2 & on the SFR <a href="http://sfradio.wordpress.com/mick/" target="_blank">webpage</a> - top quality tweets & tunes guaranteed!</div>
